TheBoxMedia goes to the Races
On the 13th of October 2018, The Box Media went to the Grand Series Horse Race at Turffontein Racecourse...
Due to some unforeseen circumstances, a couple of wardrobe mishaps ("Why do I have to wear a hat?" "Because it's the races, it's what you do!") and a quick stop at the MultiFlora (yes, we do have day jobs) we set out and arrived only about 2 hours late.
Upon arriving, we were treated to the deep growl of an impending rain storm. We decided to go in anyway, and what a great idea it was!
We were greeted by welcoming staff and friendly supporters as we made our way down to the track. We, unfortunately, missed the display walk for race 4, and didn't have time to place any bets, before the thundering beat of hooves came throttling around the final bend and for the winner, number 3, to be taken to the winner's circle.
We placed our bets on a little chestnut filly and a bay mare to win in race 5 and found a great view for the next race. Sadly, such race was never to happen as, true to form, Johannesburg decided to grace us with one of it's well known, and sometimes not so well appreciated, thunderstorms.
Within 5 minutes, the entire area was sopping wet, and cast under a grey hue. Even though the race was cancelled, it was but a sight to see. Nothing is quite so beautiful to an African heart as the Johannesburg skyline during the rainy season.
We decided to cut our losses and head out toward the East to get ready for our evening adventures, only to get completely soaked in the 100m dash between the last undercover area and the car. Once in the car, and relatively warm, we found out that Tshepo's BMW had to channel its inner 4x4 and take us through the parking lot that now closely resembled the Vaal Dam.
We drove out to a (self-initiated) chorus of "we are drowning, we, we are drowning..." feeling soaking wet, but wholly satisfied that The Box Media would be visiting the races again, fairly soon.
Until next time!
